HIMSS stands for Healthcare Information management System Society.
HIMSS is a non-profit organisation which focuses on providing global leadership with the optimal use of information technology and a management system. It has been designed to promote healthcare information and a management system to improve quality, safety, access, and cost effectiveness of patient care.
HIMSS has created an eight step process model known an EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model) that allows healthcare organisations to evaluate their progress and an EMR adoption within other healthcare organisations.
The aim of EMRAM is to ensure a paperless healthcare information and management environment. The stages have been introduced to monitor a hospital’s use and implementation of information technology. In order for healthcare organisations to qualify for a stage 7 rating, hospitals/organisations and patients must be able to share and access patient medical records electronically within the healthcare information networks.
